Mandala Experience band was an experimental jazz band formed in 1999 under the leadership of Paul Brook.

 

In 1998, Paul Brook had built his own recording studio (rue de Bagnolet in Paris) and had started his own music label named "Halbop, music for music". In 1999, he had all in hands to conduct an experiment he wanted to do for long. He gathered around him 3 other talented musicians: François Faure (keyboards), Emmanuel Reverdi (synths and fx) and Nicolas Lacoumette (different fx) and proposed them to experiment pure improvisation.

 

On a monthly basis, the musicians gathered and played together. No talks, only music. Each session was recorded in a single take. The recorded music reflected the inspiration of the moment. For the first years, Mandala recorded every sessions in analogic and the same tapes were reused each time. The name Mandala came from this idea of an ephemeral creation. According to the buddhist tradition, a mandala is a work of great complexity made by buddhist monks, which is then destroyed. Symbolizing the impermanence of things, this psychedelic music can be used as a meditation support.

 

After sometime of practice and play, they recorded few sessions that has been mixed and released. The first four released albums are a compilation of the first years of playing named after the band Mandala Experience.  The four followings albums are the results of one week-end session recorded between 2003 and 2005.

Mandala Experience is an unconventional band mixing different  styles of music : experimental jazz, psychedelic or electro rock, all the musicians share their originality, their personality. Close to Super Numeri or other electro music bands, Mandala Experience brings a new sound to electro thanks to a pure instrumental approach.

This experiment was carried out regularly until 2005 and produced 8 established albums.

Le groupe Mandala Experience se forme en 1999 sous l'impulsion de Paul Brook.

 

Alors qu'il avait en 1998 monté son propre studio et formé juridiquement son label de musique Halbop, Paul Brook avait, en 1999, tous les moyens pour mettre en oeuvre une expérience qui le tenait à coeur depuis longtemps. Rassemblant autour de lui, des musiciens doués et originaux, il leur proposa de créer une musique basée sur l'improvisation totale. François Faure (claviers), Emmanuel Reverdi (synthés et fx) et Nicolas Lacoumette (fx) acceptèrent de le rejoindre dans cette aventure. Adoptant une démarche jusqu'au boutiste, chaque séance a été enregistrée d'un seul jet suivant l'inspiration du moment et puis mixée. Originellement enregistré en analogique, les bandes étaient à chaque fois réutilisées, tel un mandala, oeuvre d'art d'une grande complexité, qui est ensuite détruit. Symbolisant l'impermanence des choses, cette musique expérimentale peut servir de support de méditation.

Mandala Experience, est un groupe non-conventionnel qui veut faire exploser les barrières entre les styles de musique. Jazz expérimental, rock psychédélique ou électro, tous les musiciens apportent leur savoir-faire et leur originalité, leur personnalité. Proche de Super Numeri ou d'autres groupes de musiques électro, Mandala Experience apporte un son nouveau à l'électro grâce à son approche purement instrumentale.

Cette expérience a été menée régulièrement jusqu'en 2006 et a porté ses fruits : 8 albums aboutis.
